Before today, I'd never heard of the term "differential pay". But as a math teacher, now that I know what it is, I'm a BIG believer in it! However, this is NOT to be confused with merit pay (I think...).
Direct quote from Duncan: "We need to respond to the market by paying more to teachers in high-need subjects like science and math..." I gotta say this from an insider's perspective, though: don't necessarily be envious of "high need" subject areas. High needs may mean differential pay, but it also means lots of wacko colleagues that should've become engineers.

I wonder if going down this road could have some unintened consequences. What about those in music and the arts saying their areas are "high need"? Soon administrations placating everyone call everything "high need". Or we run into teachers going into teaching math and science because it pays better not because they have a love or ability to teach those subjects. Will the results follow then?
